Methods for assessing phototoxicity

1. One common method involves using human skin cell models, like reconstructed skin tissue or cell cultures. By exposing these cells to the drug and light, we can evaluate the potential for phototoxic reactions. These assays not only aid in predicting adverse effects but also guide formulation changes to minimise risks.

2. Use of real human tissues allows for the most complex understanding of UV induced effects on human skin.

Our readouts for UV exposure assays include melanin quantification alongside quantification of damage induction, changes in matrix composition, epidermal thickness, cytokine release, RNA sequencing among many others.
